Our Roads

In Corrections

For women and men inside: a road back to who they really are, and the life they choose to build.

Two hands set with crystals: it's in our hands

Women in prison, on remand or sentenced, for however long she is here: a road for her, to step into her power as a woman and rebuild her life.

My Ruby Road

She comes to know, in her body and in her own words, that what happened to her is not who she is, and she steps into her power to rebuild a life she chooses.

A woman with curls in soft light, looking up

The Road

24 weekly group sessions of two hours, in four parts of six weeks, up to ten women, two women facilitators trained in trauma; every session stands whole on its own, so a woman on remand, moved, released early or joining mid-way still leaves each week with something complete, and every piece of writing can be drawn or spoken instead.

  1. Weeks 1–6

    Coming Home To Herself

She is met as a woman with a name and gifts of her own, comes to hold her story as hers to tell, and finds calm, rest and joy in the body that kept her alive.

    The Six Sessions
    1. My Name, My Way

She is met here as a woman with a name, a laugh and gifts of her own, and never as a charge or a number.

    2. What Happened To Me Is Not Who I Am

She sees her life as a long river with many chapters, finds the woman who kept going in every one of them, and knows the keys to her story are hers.

    3. Coming Home To My Body

Her body kept her alive, and she now holds simple tools in her own hands to settle it, anywhere, without anybody noticing.

    4. My Body Is Mine

Her body belongs to her, its signals are real and worth listening to, and she can begin to treat it with kindness rather than shame.

    5. The Girl I Was

She meets the girl she once was with tenderness rather than blame, and begins to give herself now what that girl needed then.

    6. Rest, Strength And Joy In My Body

Her body is also a place of rest, strength and pleasure, and she can give it good nights and moments of joy, even in here.

  2. Weeks 7–12

    The Ruby In Her

Her voice, her feelings and her worth: she speaks steadily, says no when she means it, holds herself gently, and knows her worth was never earned and never lost.

    The Six Sessions
    1. Finding My Voice

Her voice matters, and she can speak steadily for what she needs, without shrinking and without exploding.

    2. Yes, No And Not Yet

She has the right to say yes, no and not yet, and her boundaries are self-respect, including with people who love her.

    3. Every Feeling Has A Name

Her feelings, anger and grief among them, are messengers worth listening to, and she can feel them fully without being swept away.

    4. A Ruby In The Dust

She knows in her bones that her worth was never earned and can never be taken, whatever she has been through or been called.

    5. Holding Myself Gently

She can look at the times she wishes she had done differently with kindness rather than shame, and knows that owning her choices and being worthy of love live side by side.

    6. The Woman I Choose To Be

She chooses the woman she is becoming, and sees she is already being her in small ways, every day, right here.

  3. Weeks 13–18

    The Love She Carries

Mothering from inside, love that travels through walls, the people she chooses for her next chapter, and a love that feels like home.

    The Six Sessions
    1. Love Travels Through Walls

Her love for the children in her life is real and still reaches them from where she is, and she can choose who she is for them now.

    2. The Love I Was Given, The Love I Pass On

She can keep the love she was given, gently set down the ways that hurt, and choose the mothering and caring she passes on.

    3. Ten Minutes Of Gold

The short times she has with the children she loves can be full of warmth, and she can arrive steady and leave them feeling held.

    4. The Truth, Told With Love

She can find words for where she is that are true, gentle and right for a child's age, so the children she loves hear it from her, with love.

    5. The People In My Story

She chooses who belongs in the next chapter of her story, and sees the women around her as a circle she can lean on and give to.

    6. A Love That Feels Like Home

She knows what a respectful, safe love feels like, trusts her own signals, and knows she has every right to be loved that way.

  4. Weeks 19–24

    The Life She Is Building

Financial power in her own name, earning from what she is good at, and the life she chooses, in her own words, beginning wherever she stands today.

    The Six Sessions
    1. Money Is Mine To Hold

Money is something she has every right to understand and hold, and her relationship with it can become her own.

    2. My Money, My Name

Holding money in her own name, with her own card, her own PIN and her own say, is power that is hers to keep.

    3. What My Hands Already Know

She can earn from what she is already good at, and the gifts she has carried all her life are worth being paid for.

    4. Worth Paying For

She can put a fair price on what she offers and say it out loud, steadily, because her time and her skill are worth paying for.

    5. The Road Ahead Of Me

She sees the road from here as small steps that are hers to take, and knows what keeps her steady and in her power along the way.

    6. My Life Ahead, In My Own Words

She chooses the life she is building, in her own words, and carries the woman she has found in here wherever she goes next.

Men in prison, on remand or sentenced, for however long he is here: a road about him and the man he chooses to be.

The Man Behind The Curtain

He remembers that every heart around him is in his hands, inside these walls and beyond them, and begins becoming, from the inside out, the man he chooses to be.

A hand, set with crystals, opening slowly to the light
